Kilkhampton 3-4 St Agnes

Sun 7th March 2010

League Cup

Kilkampton 1-1 St Agnes (FT)
Kilkampton 1-1 St Agnes (AET)
St Agnes won 4-3 on penalties!

St Agnes made the trip to Kilkampton for the 1/4 final of the Cornwall Ladies League Cup for their first fixture since November! Having lost 10 players at the beginning of the season to injury, babies, travelling, etc, the 2009/10 season was always going to be a tough one especially with their promotion to Division 1.

Fielding a bare 11 players St Agnes started well with the slope in their favour and their pressure was rewarded as a Kilkampton player attempted to clear the line but scored an own goal. Both teams battled well with many missed opportunities from both sides and the half time score remained 1-0 to St Agnes.

The second half started with Kilkampton taking the upper hand and scoring to even the scoreline within minutes of the opening whistle. As the second half progressed the St Agnes lack of match fitness and substitutes began to show with players injured and long periods with only 9 players on the pitch with others being treated! St Agnes had a goal disallowed when Lyndsey Cowl took a free kick which Tracie Burley ran through onto and placed in the bottom corner of the net only for it to be ruled offside and the full time finished 1-1.

Extra time was played with neither team able to break the deadlock. Kilkampton played well and were unlucky not to take the lead, but for a goal line clearance from St Agnes player of the match defender Jo Burn.

Penalties followed with both keepers in good form and the penalty scores even at 3-3 as the last of the first 5 Kilkampton players stepped up to strike high and hard only for St Agnes keeper Julie Windram to tip it over the bar with both hands and carry her team through to face Callington in the semi-final.

St Agnes AFC would be delighted to hear from any ladies interested in joining their team, players of any ability welcome, training at St Agnes AFC on Wednesday evenings at 6.15pm. Contact Mandy Kimmins on 07974 370666 for more details.

Lace Up Saves Lives

12th December 2009

Members of St Agnes AFC 1st Team warmed-up on Saturday not just wearing this seasons newly sponsored waterproofs by Printout Printing Services (incorporating Martyn Kimmins Print), but also each sporting a pair of new red laces in their boots. The laces were worn in support of the Nike 'Lace Up Save Lives' Campaign where monies from the sale of the laces is donated to charity to help in the fight against Aids in Africa.

St Agnes AFC Chairman Mandy Kimmins said, "I am not sure the laces brought us luck on the pitch today at Newquay, but its a great feeling that St Agnes AFC have contributed in a small way to help the battle against aids in Africa. I am really thrilled that once again the players at St Agnes displayed such great enthusiasm for doing their bit and making a difference. We are so lucky to have players who want to get involved and understand that football can be so much more than just turning up and playing each week!"

Sam Boston from the Perranporth Mini-Soccer Centre commented "That was excellent, we must make sure we get these youngsters together again in the New Year!" Mandy Kimmins, coach from St Agnes AFC, thanked Truro for hosting the event and said, "What a great experience for our youngsters to travel to a different club and play football in a different environment than they are used to."

Mini-Soccer: The Next Generation

28th November 2009

St Agnes AFC Mini-Soccer hosted a joint training fixture with Perranporth AFC at St Agnes School on Saturday morning. A joint warm-up featuring a snake exercise with some very loud pretend aeroplanes and trains commenced the proceedings followed by a 'reflections in a mirror' stretching routine which both squads entered into with great concentration.

A six-aside kick about then followed, which all the players enjoyed with big smiles on their faces! Both teams played some excellent football showing good skills, great team spirits, and consideration for other players and amazing effort. Goals were scored for both sides to the delight of players, coaches and the eager band of watching spectators, but the winner of the event was the football played by each and every child on the pitch! With the football finished both teams shook hands, roared 3 cheers at each other and every player shook hands with and thanked the referee before enjoying the after match biscuits and cakes!

Coach for Perranporth AFC Sam Boston commented, "That was brilliant well done boys and thank you to St Agnes for inviting us". St Agnes AFC Mini-Soccer Coach Mandy Kimmins thanked Perranporth boys for visiting and said, "All of the boys absolutely loved this morning and the football was great fun to watch! It is a privilege to see the beginnings of the next generation of footballers playing with such enthusiasm!"

The St Agnes AFC Mini-Soccer team are off to visit the Truro Mini-Soccer on Saturday 12th December and have invited the Perranporth Squad to join them! St Agnes AFC mini-soccer train every Saturday term-time morning at (and with thanks to) St Agnes School from 9.45am - 11am (£2). For more details please ring Mandy Kimmins on 07974 370666.

St Agnes (U18's) County Cup

22nd November 2009

St Agnes AFC Under 18's put in a spirited performance in their first round fixture in the County Under 18 Rathbone Trophy. Man of the match St Agnes AFC Captain Sam Hatfield lead the Respect handshake at the commencement of the fixture, which was played in difficult weather conditions.

The first half saw Mullion the stronger side and, with the wind at their backs, they scored the opening goal early in the first half. St Agnes rallied and defended well against the difficult wind to leave the score 1-0 at half time. The second half saw St Agnes come out the stronger side using the wind to create all sorts of pressure on the Mullion goal, but saw their efforts frustrated when a player was correctly sent off for dissent within 10 minutes of the 2nd half starting by referee Steve Toottle who was fair and consistent throughout.

The 10 men of St Agnes rose to the challenge and were quickly rewarded when a fine strike by Thads Vingoe found the back of the Mullion net to equalize the score. St Agnes continued to pressure with Mark Mitchell's strike thwarted by the goal post, Adam Coveney striking wide, and Jordan Maloy over the bar. Both teams battled well with the score 1-1 at full time.

Extra time started, but the deadlock continued with the score remaining 1-1 after extra time. An exciting penalty shoot out followed with Mullion taking the match at 5-4 on penalties. St Agnes AFC wish Mullion success in the next round!

No Pain - No Gain

21st November 2009

St Agnes AFC first team players showed their dedication to the club on Saturday evening when they took part in a Sponsored Waxing Evening held at the Railway Inn, St Agnes. Several weeks before the event the original 'volunteered' victim Gavin Bennett bravely offered to have his back waxed and planning for the evening commenced with all first team players helping to raise sponsorship in anticipation of watching Gavin suffer!

The evening arrived and, as with all these sorts of events, when beautician Christina Pope of 'Fingers & Toes', St Agnes arrived with her pot of hot wax other 'volunteers' began to come forward! In total 6 members of the St Agnes AFC first team rose to the challenge (eagerly encouraged by their team mates) and braved the waxing with Paul Luke having his underarms done, Martin Dunstan his chest, Sam Hatfield, Mike Burn, and Gavin Counter their legs, and of course Gavin Bennett his back. The cries of pain from each victim were greeted with glee and Christina was assisted in her mammoth waxing task by 'trainee' Mel Gilbert.

The evening concluded with a Raffle and Race Night with the total proceeds to St Agnes AFC club funds exceeding £550. St Agnes AFC Chairman Mandy Kimmins commented, "It is great to see the players instigating and supporting club fundraising events. £550 is a lot of money to St Agnes AFC and will help us fund the Astro-Turf Training our 3 men's team use throughout the winter evenings. We are very lucky to have a group of players who don't just want to turn up and play football for the club, but are prepared to actively help to put something back!"
